What's the average power bill in New Zealand? (by household size)

The average Kiwi home uses about 7,100 kWh a year — but "normal" swings hugely with household size and whether you're in Auckland or Invercargill. Here are the benchmarks, and the efficient number worth aiming at.

Power prices rose again this year, winter bills are landing, and the question in every flat and family group chat is the same: is this normal? The bill won’t tell you — here’s the context it’s missing.

Average power consumption per household, by size

New Zealand homes run overwhelmingly on electricity, so one fuel tells most of the story. These are average figures, anchored on MBIE’s national household data, with a column for climate — because heating a Dunedin winter is not heating an Auckland one:

In dollars: at a typical usage rate of around 34c/kWh (blending a standard rate with a cheaper controlled hot-water rate, which most homes with a cylinder have), a 4-person temperate home’s 9,000 kWh is roughly $3,060 a year — call it an average monthly power bill of about $255, though winter months land well above that and summer well below. That’s before your plan’s daily fixed charge, which varies too much between plans to generalise.

The caveat that matters more in NZ than anywhere else

A low bill is not automatically a good sign here. New Zealand’s housing stock is famously cold, and plenty of households keep bills down by underheating — heating one room, going to bed early, putting up with damp. If your number sits below the table and the house is cold in July, you don’t have an efficient home; you have an unheated one. The goal isn’t a smaller number at any cost — it’s warmth per dollar.

Which reframes the whole comparison: the useful question isn’t “how do I use less?” — it’s “what would this house cost to run warm, done properly?”

What an efficient home uses

We model that home: same size, same people, but heat pumps doing the heating, an efficient hot water setup, LED lighting and decent appliances — warm, not rationed. It runs on about 28% less electricity than the averages above. For the 4-person temperate home, that’s roughly 6,500 kWh — about $2,200 a year, call it $850 a year less than average, while being warmer than most of the homes it’s being compared to.

That’s the honest target. And if your home was built before 2008, the state may pay most of the cost of the two biggest steps — check the Warmer Kiwi Homes expansion, which now reaches middle-income areas.
