Most energy advice is either too vague to act on or quietly trying to sell you something. Decode Energy exists to do the opposite: take the one question that actually matters — is this worth my money? — and answer it honestly, for every part of your home.

The two things keeping bills high

After fifteen years of energy audits, we can tell you the real reason most households overpay — and it isn’t laziness. It’s two barriers:

1. You can’t see what’s using the energy. A power bill is one opaque number. Until you know what’s driving it, every piece of “save energy” advice is just guessing.
2. You can’t tell a good investment from a slow one. Some upgrades pay for themselves in months; others take decades. From the brochure, they look identical.

And the usual way past both — paying a consultant to audit your home — costs more than most of the savings. That’s the gap Decode Energy fills: the free check shows whether you’re paying more than comparable homes, and whether it’s your usage or your plan. The guides decode every energy use with a saving, a cost and an honest payback. No consultant’s fee.

The “decode” idea

A power bill is a single, opaque number. Our whole job is to break it apart: to show you where the money really goes, what each fix costs, and how fast it pays back — ranked, so you know what to do first and what to skip. That’s the decode.

What makes us different

• We tell you when not to spend. We show the real economics, including the upgrades that don’t pay back. That’s rare in this space — and it’s the whole point.
• Country-specific, not translated. Each edition uses that country’s real tariffs, rebates, standards and terminology — not a generic global doc.
• Plain English. Written so a teenager could follow it, with the technical depth underneath for those who want it.
• Every figure is sourced. Our numbers trace to named authorities — AER, Ofgem, EIA, the Energy Saving Trust, ENERGY STAR and others — and they’re dated.

About the founder

Hi — I’m Ewan Willcox.

I’ve spent 15 years in energy management: auditing industrial, commercial, government and residential sites, building energy management systems, and building the tools organisations use to find savings. Across organisations large and small, that work has cut millions of dollars from energy bills.

I trained and worked as a Certified Energy Manager, and I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly of energy advice. Here’s what kept nagging at me: most of my wins came inside big organisations — while households and small businesses were leaving the same kinds of savings on the table. Not because the savings aren’t there, but because of those two barriers above: you can’t see what’s using the energy, and you can’t tell which upgrades pay for themselves. And — fair enough — nobody wants to pay a consultant’s fee to find out.

I started Decode Energy to fix that: the analysis a consultant would do, without the consultant’s fee.
