Energy is one of the few costs you can actually control

Rent is fixed. Wages are fixed. Suppliers put their prices up and you wear it.

Your energy bill is different — it’s full of decisions, and most small businesses have never had anyone look at theirs properly.

The guides on this page cover what you can do yourself. If you’d rather someone did it for you, that’s what the rest of this page is.

Free · no obligation

Start with a free bill health check

Send a recent bill. You’ll get a straight answer on three things:

  • Whether your rate is competitive against what’s actually available to you now
  • Whether you’re on the right tariff for the way you actually trade
  • Whether there are errors on the bill worth chasing

No cost. No obligation. No sales call unless you ask for one.

If there’s nothing worth doing, we’ll tell you that — it’s the most common answer we give households on our free tool, and businesses get the same treatment.

Not sure what to send? A PDF of your most recent electricity bill is enough. If you have interval data or a second site, mention it and we’ll ask for what we need.

If you want it done for you

Bill Recovery & Disputes — no recovery, no fee

A back-audit of 12–24 months of your bills, looking for the errors that quietly cost real money: wrong tariff assignments, meter and multiplier errors, discounts that silently expired.

Here’s exactly how it works:

  1. We check. You send the bills; we go through them line by line.
  2. We find the errors — or we don’t. If there’s nothing there, we tell you so, you pay nothing, and that’s the end of it. That happens, and it’s a real answer.
  3. You sign a letter of authority. That lets us deal with your retailer on your behalf.
  4. We put the case. We write to the retailer, argue it, and negotiate the figure.
  5. You get paid, then we do. Our fee is 40% of the amount recovered.

Nothing to pay up front. Nothing to pay if we find nothing. Nothing to pay if the retailer won’t settle.

You only ever pay out of money you wouldn’t otherwise have had.

Forty percent sounds like a lot until you notice what it’s forty percent of: money that was gone. The alternative isn’t a cheaper consultant — it’s never seeing it at all.

This is you if: your bills have never been checked by anyone except the retailer who sent them.

What the fee does and doesn’t cover. It applies only to money actually recovered — what the retailer agrees to credit or refund for past overcharging. Anything that only improves your bills going forward sits outside it: if correcting a wrong tariff also lowers what you pay from now on, that ongoing saving is entirely yours. Tariff & Plan Optimisation is a separate quoted service for exactly that reason — those savings can only ever be forward-looking, so there’s nothing to “recover” and no percentage to take.

Tariff & Plan Optimisation

We review your rates and tariff against how you actually operate — your real hours, your real load — find the plan that genuinely fits, and request the changes with your retailer so it actually happens.

This is you if: you’re on whatever plan you signed years ago, or you’ve rolled over onto a rate nobody re-checked.

Smart Business Energy Audit

Your site, your equipment, your hours, your interval data — turned into a prioritised, costed plan, with every payback computed on your numbers rather than a reference site’s.

This is you if: you want the full picture and a plan you can work through in order.

Ongoing Energy Management

Energy managed like any other business input — monitoring, budgets, exception alerts and a clear annual plan, so the savings stick and the next opportunity doesn’t wait for the next crisis.

This is you if: you’ve fixed things before and watched them drift back.

Everything except Bill Recovery is quoted after the free bill check, once we know what we’re dealing with.

Three things worth knowing before you hire anyone

We take no money from installers, retailers or equipment suppliers.

Plenty of “energy advice” in Australia is lead generation — free assessments that somehow always conclude you need the thing the assessor sells. We don’t sell hardware, we don’t take referral fees, and we’re not paid to reach any particular answer. The only person paying us is you, which is the only way the advice can be worth anything.

We tell you when not to spend.

It’s the line we lead the whole business with, and you can check it: our published guides mark the upgrades that don’t pay back, with the working shown. A solar quote that doesn’t stack up gets told it doesn’t stack up.

Our workings are public — go and check them.

Most consultants hand you a proposal and ask you to trust the numbers. We publish ours. The hour-by-hour models behind our EV and battery articles are free to download, with every assumption and source listed, specifically so you can pull them apart. When our own review found errors in one, we fixed it and said so in public.

That’s the standard the paid work is held to as well.

Who you’d actually be dealing with

Ewan Willcox — 15 years in commercial and industrial energy management, with a BE (Hons) in Renewable Energy Engineering, and formerly a Certified Energy Manager.

The same approach used to strip millions in energy costs out of large organisations, sized down for a business like yours. A café’s bill has fewer zeros than a factory’s; the discipline that finds the money is identical.

You deal with him directly — there’s no account manager between you and the person doing the work.

When we’ll tell you not to bother

  • If your bills are small. Under roughly $5,000 a year of electricity, the guide will likely get you most of the way and paid work is hard to justify. Buy the $99 guide, do the quick wins, come back if you grow.
  • If your landlord controls everything that matters. Some tenancies leave you with almost nothing to act on. The guides tag which items are yours and which are the building’s — worth checking before you pay anyone, including us.
  • If you’ve already had a proper audit recently. A second opinion is sometimes worth it. A second audit usually isn’t.

Questions people ask

Will this turn into a sales pitch for solar?

No — we don’t sell or install anything, and take no commissions. If solar stacks up for your site we’ll say so and tell you what to ask installers for. If it doesn’t, we’ll say that instead, which happens plenty.

How much does it cost?

The bill health check is free. Bill recovery is 40% of whatever we recover for you, and nothing if we recover nothing. Everything else is quoted after the free check, once we know what we’re actually dealing with — quoting before that would be guessing.

What if you don’t find anything?

Then you pay nothing. We’ll tell you your bills are clean, which is genuinely useful to know, and you’re free to get on with your day.

What if the retailer refuses to pay?

Then you owe us nothing. We carry that risk, not you — that’s the whole point of working on contingency.

Is there GST on top?

Not at present — we’re not currently registered for GST, so none is added to our fees. If that changes we’ll confirm it in writing before it affects anything you’ve agreed to.

Do I have to sign anything to get started?

Not for the free check. A letter of authority is only needed if we find something worth disputing and you want us to take it to your retailer — and we’ll explain exactly what it covers before you sign it.

How long does it take?

The bill check is quick. Recovery depends on how fast your retailer moves, which is not something anyone can promise. The bigger pieces depend on how many sites and how much data exists — we’ll tell you the honest timeline before you commit, not after.

Do you work outside Australia?

The guides cover five markets, but the paid work is Australian only for now — tariffs, rebates and market rules are country-specific, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise.

Start where it costs you nothing
