Your hot water cylinder is about 30% of your power bill — four cheap fixes (NZ)

Hot water is the quiet giant of the Kiwi power bill. Check your tariff, your thermostat, your cylinder wrap and your showers — most homes can claw back real money without replacing anything.

Everyone argues about heaters in winter — we’ve priced those here — but the appliance quietly drinking around 30% of a typical NZ power bill is the hot water cylinder in the cupboard. It runs every day of the year, nobody looks at it, and most homes are overpaying on it in at least one of four ways. All four fixes are cheap; two are free.

1. Check you’re on a controlled (ripple) tariff — the biggest free win

Most NZ cylinders can run on a controlled supply — your retailer’s ripple signal heats your water in cheaper windows, at a meaningfully lower rate (typically ~25c/kWh against a ~37c standard rate). Plenty of households are paying full rate on their cylinder without knowing, especially after switching retailers or moving in.

Ten-minute check: look at your bill for a “controlled” rate line (retailers label it differently — controlled, night, or a composite rate), and if you can’t see one, ask your retailer whether your cylinder is (or can be) on controlled supply. On a cylinder using several thousand kWh a year, that rate gap is hundreds of dollars annually — for one phone call.

2. Set the thermostat right — 60°C at the cylinder

Hotter than 60°C wastes power holding water at a temperature you’ll only mix back down with cold at the tap. Cooler than 60°C isn’t safe — below that, legionella bacteria can grow in stored water. So 60°C at the cylinder is the number: hot enough to be safe, no hotter than useful. If yours is cranked higher (common on older cylinders), turning it down is free money every day.

3. Wrap an older cylinder

If your cylinder is an older low-pressure unit that feels warm to the touch, it’s radiating paid-for heat into a cupboard. A cylinder wrap costs about $60–100 at the hardware store, fits in an hour, and pays for itself quickly on an older tank — warm-to-touch is literally the test. (Modern cylinders are well-insulated already; if the outside is cold, save your money.) Wrapping the first metre of hot pipe off the cylinder helps too.

4. Showers rule the bill

The cylinder only pays for the hot water you pull from it — and in most homes that’s overwhelmingly showers. Minutes and flow rate are the whole game: a shorter shower costs proportionally less, and a water-efficient shower head cuts every future shower’s cost without anyone noticing the difference. Free to cheap, and it compounds daily.

The upgrade, honestly

The big move is replacing a resistive cylinder with a hot-water heat pump — about 3 units of hot water per unit of electricity instead of 1-for-1, usually the single biggest saving available in an NZ home. Two honest notes from the guide: Warmer Kiwi Homes doesn’t fund hot-water heat pumps (its heat-pump money is for space heating), so most households pay full price — and at full price it’s a considered purchase, strongest at end-of-life when the old cylinder needs replacing anyway. Decide now, buy when it dies; the four fixes above are for every day between. If you do buy: insist on a 5-year compressor and 10-year cylinder warranty, and note that CO2-refrigerant units (both major brands are sold in NZ) hold their efficiency better through cold snaps — worth it in the south.
